Is Chessorix free to play?+
Yes, Chessorix is completely free to play. Every core feature, video chess, global matchmaking, private rooms with friends, and the computer opponent, is free with no subscription required. A small set of premium features, like gender filtering in matchmaking, will roll out later for players who want more control over their experience.
Do I need to download an app to play?+
No download needed. Just sign in at chessorix.com from your computer or phone and you're ready to play. A dedicated mobile app is currently in development, so stay tuned.
Is the video connection safe and private?+
Yes. Chessorix uses WebRTC, a peer-to-peer video technology, to connect you directly with your opponent. Your video and audio stream only between you and the person you're playing, nothing is recorded, stored, or routed through our servers. Once the game ends, the connection closes automatically.
Do I have to show my camera to play?+
Not at all, it's entirely your choice. Play with video and mic on to see and talk with your opponent, keep your camera off and just talk, or turn both off and play in silence. Your privacy, your call.
How do I play with a friend?+
Create a private room and share the six-character room code with your friend. They enter the code, and you're both connected instantly, no sign-up friction, no waiting.
How does matchmaking with strangers work?+
Matchmaking is skill-based. Chessorix pairs you with opponents around your rating, so your games stay competitive and fair as your skill grows.
What is the ELO rating system?+
Chessorix uses an ELO rating system similar to Chess.com's, with K-factor tiers that adjust how quickly your rating moves based on your experience level. Win games, your rating rises. Lose, it drops. It's a standard, proven way to measure real chess skill over time.
Can I play against the computer?+
Yes. Chessorix includes a built-in computer opponent powered by Stockfish, one of the strongest chess engines in the world. Practice solo anytime, no opponent required.
Is there a Chessorix mobile app?+
Not yet, it's currently under development. Coming soon.
What happens if my opponent disconnects mid-game?+
Same as any rated match, it's treated as a loss for the player who leaves. Their rating drops, yours rises, just like a normal win.
